The area of Grangegorman, to the north of Dublin's city
centre, has been home to Ireland’s first Psychiatric Hospital since
at least 1814. The entire 700-acre site is now to be redeveloped to house
the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).
In order to preserve the history of the hospital and the surrounding area,
a society for the creation of Grangegorman Museum has been established. The
aim of the Society is to collect and collate artefacts, memorabilia, records
and the memories of individuals in a way that is accessible to a wider community.
Our main objective is to establish a permanent museum within the redevelopment
of Grangegorman.
This website demonstrates some of the material we have collated to date.
Visits to view this material at our temporary museum can be made by appointment.
